Shared/Democratic/Distributive Leadership

  * Shared leadership- Responsibilities are distributed within a team and the members of the team influence one another.
  * Democratic- Members of the group all participate in the role of decision-making.
  * Distributive- Responsibilities are distributed among team members who have different skills and experiences, but a shared identified goal.
  * In comparison to traditional leadership, the principal still has the overall say of the final decision. Responsibilities are divided among individuals in the group.
  * Advantages (when/why to use this form of leadership)- It will improve the quality of decision-making. It is a convenient way to manage desired complex demands. This form of leadership reduces the likelihood of one person holding key information and being completely in control of decision-making. By using this form of leadership, members of the group have increased levels of motivation. This kind of leadership is beneficial when you are able to put the right jobs in the right people’s hands- sometimes others are better at things or more well-served to do certain tasks than you are. If deadlines are not critical, this form of leadership would also be ideal.
  * Disadvantages (when/why not to use this form of leadership)- Work can be fragmented when there is not one identified goal. There’s lack of clarity and the decision-making process takes longer because there are so many more people that information has to go through before a decision can be finalized. The leadership role is devalued because it’s given and dived up among others, rather than just the leader. The development of leadership will reduce. This kind of leadership would not be as beneficial when deadlines are involved. Using this form of leadership could put jobs in the hands of the wrong people, or team members who are not best served to do that specific job.
