RESPONSIBILITIES
The College of Education at Northern Illinois University is seeking an energetic and creative chair who will provide effective, forward-thinking leadership for the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education. The department offers M.S. Ed. and Ed.D. degrees in counseling and in adult and higher education.
The department chair serves as the department’s primary academic and administrative officer, and is accountable directly to the Dean of the College of Education for all aspects of development and operation of the department, including budget, curriculum, personnel, and resource allocation. The chair will work with approximately 15 regular continuing faculty, as well as supportive professional staff, part-time instructional staff, operating staff, and approximately 500 students. The chair position is a twelve-month position and salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Earned doctorate from an accredited university in Higher Education, Adult Education, Counseling, or a closely related field
2. Able to meet department criteria for tenure at the associate or full professor level
3. Strong record in teaching, research, and service
4. Administrative experience in a higher education setting including involvement in program evaluation and accreditation
5. Strong commitment to advancing diversity
6. Excellent interpersonal, communication and leadership skills that can foster collaboration within the college, the university, and the public and private sectors, and provide advocacy for faculty, staff, and students
PREFERRED SKILLS
1. Experience in generating and fostering grant acquisition, research and artistry activities, and innovative program development
2. Commitment to attracting and retaining diverse and productive faculty and students
3. Experience with school based partnerships and non-school based programs involving collaboration and outreach
4. Experience in evaluating faculty and staff
5. Understanding of and support for appropriate technology integration in an academic setting
6. Commitment to advancing international partnerships and student participation in international experiences
7. Participation in lifelong learning activities
