*I enjoyed reflecting on both the self-efficacy and collective efficacy in
my school as it allowed me to see how much room we have for improvements in
our schools. Self-efficacy is defined as a persons judgement about his/her
capability to organize and execute a course of action that is required to
attain a certain level of performance. Educators typically have high
self-efficacy and at times can get in the way of good teaching practices.
In my school district, some teachers high self-efficacy have a negative
impact on students when the judgement of their own capabilities are
hindered by the ¨my way or the highway¨ routine. Education has changed,
teaching and learning has developed into something that was very different
from ten years ago. Teachers must have high self-efficacy but at the same
time be able to change what they are doing for whatever is best for
children. On a good note, we have many teachers that display mastery
experience, modeling and vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, and the
ability to lean on their physiological and affective states. These are the
teachers that I would love to work with as an administrator in the future.
My all time favorite teacher that I modeled my teaching after had all of
these things and by observing and imitating him it has made me a better
educator. These teachers would be considered leaders in my school and they
are the leaders of our school now. Collective efficacy is defined as a
shared perception of teachers in a school and that the efforts of the
faculty as a whole will have a positive effect on students. After running
TBT meetings for over a year to many different grade levels and buildings
this entire process was put in front of me every day. Our process included
the sources of efficacy for the entire grade level, next they were to
analyze, look at teaching competence, discuss good teaching skills,
complete anecdotal notes on collective efficacy including success with a
given unit. Upon completion of this process we were able to fill out step
five from our TBT form which all comes down to performance. As a district
we are striving for collective efficacy. We are going through building,
administration, and staffing changes that will all come to light next
year. Woody Hayes said ¨You win with people¨ and I believe that with high
teacher self-efficacy and the plan we have in place our collective efficacy
will grow in the future. *
