[Ous-lp-rp13] EDAD 6020 Response to Question #2

Danielle, I can relate to both of your outlooks on your school. My school
also operates out of the professional structure. I love working in a place
that allows me to feel as though I am a part of something bigger than
myself. My principal also comes to us when a decision is needing to be made
about a student so that she can gather insight on a situation. My principal
also delegates certain responsibilities to the teachers in the building.
While we do have a set of guidelines that we are to follow when it comes to
procedures and student safety, situations are also taken into consideration
where teachers can use their own judgment.

Vinton Elementary is also anything but chaotic. I too, like you am glad
about that. I actually completed a long term substitute position at a
school where the atmosphere was rather chaotic. This type of atmosphere led
to a dissention among the staff, a lack of trust in the administrators, and
an undesired to show up to work.

Thank you for your response!

I would have to describe South Elementary as a good blend of professional
and loosely coupled. Evidence of the professional structure is the way our
principal involves teachers and/or grade level teams in decision making
that affects them. She always comes to us when a decision needs to be made
about our kids to get our opinion and insight. More evidence of
professional structure would be although there are rules and procedures set
to guide us, situations and circumstances are taken into consideration. I
say that South is also loosely coupled within the organization that is
Vinton County Local Schools. Each building is ran differently, specially
the three elementary buildings. District administration allows building
administration the flexibility to do what they can for the success of
students. There is a basic framework that is the same between the
elementary schools (mainly content and curriculum) but then each building
has freedoms to meet the needs of its community and families.

South Elementary is anything but chaotic (and boy am I ever so glad for
that). In my seven years working full time there, under the direction of
two different administrators, I have never know of things to be
contradictive or inconsistent. I think a chaotic structure would be very
detrimental to the success of students and for the retention of effective
teachers.
