In order to become an authentic leader you must never think that what you
are doing is enough. Along with that goes believing that “you” are enough.
When I look at myself and the traits that I have, I know I must not be
satisfied with who I am because I can always do better. The five traits, or
“Core Principles” as one article stated, are know yourself, listen,
express, appreciate and serve. Of the five core principles I feel
comfortable with knowing myself, appreciation, and serving. I consider
myself to be very critical when it comes to defining who I am. I have set
goals for who I am and where I want to go in life. The article compares
appreciate with the word love. An organization can build and form
relationships around a little bit of appreciation. When an individual feels
appreciated they get motivated and strive to do better. Appreciation is a
trait that I feel very confident about because I have been on the wrong
side of the business spectrum and never want my partners to feel the way I
have. A leader must be someone that can serve the people they represent. A
leader is someone that should be able to look at their group and think “Who
are we and what do we want to become? Now how can I help to get us there?”

Although I feel confident about the traits already discussed I
understand that I am not where I want to be but I do feel more confident
with them. The traits that I believe could use more focus are listening and
expressing. Listening is one of the more important traits of being an
authentic leader. There have been many times when working in a group that
an individual will take control and distinguish the work within the group
and apply the wrong work to the wrong individual because they do not take
the time to talk and understand the strengths from each person in the
group. Listening to the people you’re working with will make everybody’s
job easier because they will have input in the job they are doing and will
be placed in the position to succeed. The trait that I believe I struggle
with the most is being able to express. Being able to express without bias
or fear of the outcomes demonstrates trust an integrity. An authentic
leader will say something that they believe to be true no matter the
outcomes or the toes that get stepped on. Each of these traits can
determine and good lead from a great leader.
