EDAD 6020, Response to Angelica Gamon

Rational systems run smoothly because they are structured, in that labor is
divided among members. Like you stated, these members are all striving
toward the same goal. In regards to perceptual lenses, this best
represents the structural lens, which is comparable to the way in which a
factory is run. However, within a natural system, members may not share a
common goal, but all want to feel as if they are part of the system.
Effective communication among members keeps these systems running. If one
were to view this system through a perceptual lens, it would be obvious
this system fits in the human resource lens- where human relations empower
members. In regards to perceptual lenses, an open/social systems best
represent the political lens. In that those within the particular system
and those outside systems most likely have different goals. This could
become political if conflict arises, like you stated it is less likely that
goals will be agreed upon by everyone. Both sides will seek opportunities
to build power, and advocate for their system.

*Rational systems are a set of goals that are set to achieve a
predetermined set of goals. This groups’ purpose is to share a common goal.
They combine them with a similar skill. Most commonly, in the school
system, this group would fall into the support staff (cooks, custodians,
bus drivers, etc.). Unlike rational systems, natural systems do not share a
common goal. This happens because there are conflicting goals within in the
groups. This group is typically made up of teachers. The reason for this is
because of the departmentalizing the content areas.Open/social systems are
made up the the entire staff, as well as the community. With this system
being made up of everybody, it is less likely to be able to make a set of
goals that can be agreed upon by everybody.*
