Subject: Upcoming Professional Training at SMSC
Graduate/Professional Training at Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation
The Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation, is a partnership between George Mason University and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), offering short intensive residential courses hosted in their sustainably-built Academic Center on the grounds of SCBI in Front Royal Virginia. All courses offer continuing education credits (CEUs) and some can be taken for graduate credit as well. Limited scholarships are available for eligible applicants for some programs.Visit their website (http://SMConservation.gmu.edu) for more details about each course, course costs, and credits earned.
Estimating Animal Abundance and Occupancy<https://smconservation.gmu.edu/programs/graduate-and-professional/estimating-animal-abundance-and-occupancy/>
July 8-19, 2019 (Apply before April 29!)
The course is designed to provide a strong theoretical and analytical background to both graduate students and professionals in distance sampling, mark-recapture, and occupancy modeling techniques. All three techniques are aimed at addressing detection probability concerns associated with most animal sampling techniques and are commonly used by ecologists and researchers around the globe. Each of the three analytical frameworks will be taught in 3-4 day modules, each covering a range of modeling approaches and tools, both basic and advanced, with additional focus on study design recommendations. All analytical work will be done in the R environment with a range of relevant packages, and all exercises will use real field data. Time will be made available for consultation with instructors about one's own data and research. The course is taught by Brittany Mosher, Jim Hines, Paul Lukacs and Joe Kolowski.
Additional Upcoming Courses:
Managing Ecological Data in R: Introduction to data science and the art of wrangling for ecologists<https://smconservation.gmu.edu/programs/graduate-and-professional/ecological_data/>
August 5-9, 2019
Essentials of Spatial Ecology: GIS Analysis in R, QGIS and Google Earth Engine<https://smconservation.gmu.edu/programs/graduate-and-professional/gis/>
