Subject: Summer 2012 INTERNSHIP opportunity in Athens, Ohio

Olivia,

Can you let the Newman Community know about our summer internship opportunities? We have appreciated your involvement in the past and I thought there might be some people who might be interested. This is a key leadership role for Good Works during the summer.

Below is some information about this.

Thanks for your help!

Gratefully,
Paul Richard

Can you pass the word for us? Can you pass this on to people you know who might be interested in this opportunity?

Greetings from your friends at Good Works!

Do you know a college-age person seeking a summer (9 week) internship this summer working with people struggling with poverty?

At Good Works, we are seeking SUMMER INTERNS who are interested in growing deeper in their relationship with Christ while serving the people of rural appalachia.

Visit our web site www.good-works.net and click on internships. Then, select Summer Service for a complete description and a short video.

This summer (our 12 years of Summer Service), in addition to our on-going work with widows, children in the risks of poverty and people who are experiencing homelessness, we will also be working with local teens through agriculture and discipleship training initiatives.

Do you know someone who enjoys working with children or seniors (widows or widowers) or people struggling with poverty and aging issues? Or do you know someone who loves teens or kids (K-6) or wants to explore working with people experiencing homelessness? If so, please send them our way to consider our summer internship. Good Works has 20 different contexts for ministry and our interns experience a wide range of leadership development opportunities.

The internship provides housing, food and a stipend.

Love is a verb,

Keith Wasserman

"I made the widow's heart sing,
I was a father to the fatherless.
I took up the case of the stranger"
(Job 29:12-17)

THE VISION OF GOOD WORKS is to fulfill Jesus own mission recorded in Isaiah 61:1 and Luke in 4:18-19:
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for
the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor – (NIV)

As learners, our mission is to discover new things to do that will give substance to the command of Jesus to “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34)
We seek to intentionally love vulnerable people who are strangers, fatherless and widows and in doing so, help others find a place to love and serve with us; to extend themselves in love and grow spiritually. To do this, we have created and seek to sustain an intentional Christian Community through which we can model FAITH in the good news of the power of Jesus Christ to change our lives. Furthermore, in addition to meeting the felt needs of our friends struggling with poverty, we seek to instill HOPE through acts of service and compassion in partnership with those in the world who are not-yet Christians and in partnership with the body of Christ. In doing this, we fulfill both the great commandment and the great commission and grow as the followers of Jesus. - Keith Wasserman

"Appalachia is one of the poorest regions in the United States and is a label for a 200,000 square mile area running along the spine of Appalachian Mountains from southern New York to northern Mississippi. It includes all of West Virginia and parts of 12 other states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Among these, Appalachian Ohio, where Good Works is based, has a population of 1.4 million and is one of the poorest regions in the United States. In 2005, nearly one-fifth of the families in Appalachian Ohio lived in poverty, earning $15,000 or less per year for a family of three. Despite the local presence of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, the college-going rate for Appalachian Ohio is 30 percent, compared to 62 percent for the US." - From Organizing for Social Change, A Dialectic Journey of Theory and Praxis by Michael J. Papa, Arvind Singhal (of Ohio University) and Wendy H. Papa. (Page 208)
