Subject: Invitation to Participate in AI-Simulated Client for Counselor Training Study

Dear Master’s-Level Counseling Practicum Student,

You are invited to participate in a research study titled “Do AI-Powered Client Simulations Improve Counselor Trainees’ Competence? A Randomized Controlled Trial.” This study is supported by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) 2026 Small Grants for Studies of AI-Client Simulations.

The purpose of this study is to better understand whether AI-simulated client practice can support counseling trainees’ self-efficacy and counseling competence during practicum training.

You may be eligible to participate if you are:
*18 years of age or older
*Enrolled in a master’s-level counseling practicum during the Fall 2026 academic term in the United States
*Willing to be randomly assigned to either the AI simulation group or the control group

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a pre-intervention assessment and a post-intervention assessment. Depending on your group assignment, you may also be asked to use SimCare AI for at least 30 minutes per week for 12 weeks and upload three de-identified practice transcripts with brief feedback.

Participation is voluntary, and you may choose not to participate or stop participating at any time. The research team is external to your counseling practicum course and is not involved in your instruction, grading, supervision, or program evaluation. Your decision to participate, not participate, or withdraw will not affect your grade, practicum evaluation, program standing, or relationships with your university, instructors, or supervisors.

Participants may receive up to $50 in Amazon eGift cards for completing study activities: $25 after completing the pre-intervention assessment and $25 after completing the post-intervention assessment.

Your participation will help us learn more about how AI-simulated client practice may support counselor training and skill development.

If you are interested in participating, please use the link below to review the study information and complete the pre-intervention survey:
