I generally recommend that students obtain permission before using any instruments written by others to avoid potential copyright violations. Fortunately, many (but not all) scholars are willing to share. This is the first report like this I can remember seeing. It appears to be a legitimate story (but maybe it will turn out to be fake news).

Many of us use established questionnaire instruments in our research. The following linked article on the alleged unauthorized use of a copyrighted questionnaire instrument and the aftermath thereof just came across my screen (via Leo Simonetta on the American Association for Public Opinion Research listserv). The key take-home point, it seems to me, is: Be very careful!!!
