The Center for Play Therapy is pleased to annouce that early registration is now open for
the 2012 Annual Fall Conference. Please join us for an exciting workshop presented by
Drs. Garry Landreth and Sue Bratton.

Group Play Therapy: Connecting and Healing Through Play and Relationships
This workshop will focus on the therapeutic use of group work with children 4-12 years of age to maximize treatment outcomes. For some children, group play therapy is the initial treatment of choice.  For other children, group play therapy is an essential step in the healing process following individual play therapy.  Healthy peer relationships are essential to children's holistic development. In the group play therapy relationship, children learn from each other about themselves and about each other, work out difficulties, encourage each other, share in each other's pain and joy, discover what it is like to help each other, and learn important lessons about social relationships.
The rationale for group play therapy including its unique benefits, criteria for selecting group members, developmental considerations, playroom setting, the role of the play therapist in facilitating the group process, personal characteristic of the effective group play therapist, and unique problems including responding to aggression and limit setting will be presented. Variations of the model for siblings, preadolescents, and for children needing additional individual support will be addressed. Participants will also learn semi-structured activities to engage more resistant pre-adolescents to facilitate group dynamics. Video segments and case material will be used to illustrate group process and the role of the group play therapist. Research support for the presenters' approach to group play therapy will be provided.
