Dear GB,

I hereby nominate* Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng* as the 2012 African
Hero of the Year.

*Profile:*
Professor Frimpong Boateng is a Ghanaian Cardiothoracic surgeon. After
graduating from the University of Ghana Medical School as the best student
in surgery in 1962, he went to further his studies in Germany specializing
in cardiothoracic surgery. Although he could have made a fortune working
abroad, he chose to return to Ghana as the country's first locally based
cardiothoracic surgeon.

Upon his return, with the support of the Government of Ghana he pulled
together his personal monetary and logistic resources to established the
National Cardiotheracic Center. It was the first medical facility in Ghana
for people with heart related problems. The Center is also opened to
patients from Africa and the world over. With dedication, perseverance and
courage, Prof. Frimpong Boateng, pioneered the upgrading of the National
Cardiothoracic Center to a Graduate Medical Institution, the West African
College of Physicians and Surgeons, to train heart surgeons, cardiologists,
cardiac anaesthetists, operating room nurses, intensive care nurses, cardiac
technicians, and other cardiothoracic technicians. This facility not only
provides high quality specialized medical training to Ghanaian medical
professionals, but also many countries in Africa have sent medical personnel
to be trained at the Center.

Concerned about the high cost of heart surgery, he also set up the Ghana
Heart Foundation, that is responsible for paying part of the cost for heart
surgery for underpriviledged Ghanaians who require heart surgery. This great
son of Africa has brought hope to the hopeless and continues to save lives.
I think he deserves this honor.

Thank you.
