Faculty Panel about Missouri shooting
Discussion at the Athena will cover recent controvercies

ATHENS, Ohio (Month Day, Year) - The student organization Student for Law Justice and Culture (SLJC) has organized a faculty panel titled "Racism, Policing and Struggles for Justice in Ferguson, Missouri on Thursday Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Athena Cinema, Room 212.



The discussion topic of the panel will be the recent shooting, subsequent police controversy and the protests that continue on the streets of Ferguson. There will be an audience question and answer session at the end of the discussion.



The panel will consist of professors from a number of departments at Ohio University and will be moderated by Dr. Haley Duschinski, director of the Center for Law, Justice and Culture. Participants include Dr. Patricia Gunn (African American Studies), Dr. Kelly Faust (Sociology Criminology), Dr. Vincent Jungkunz (Political Science) and Dr. Debra Thompson (Political Science)



The discussion will extend to cover racial bias in the police system, mass incarcerations and laws that have been at the forefront of cases involving violence like that of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Renisha McBride. The panel will also examine the role played by both mass media and social media.



Organized by SLJC and hosted by the Center for Law, Justice and Culture, the panel is also sponsored by the Multicultural Center and the Black Student Cultural Programming Board (BSCPB) and it is part of the "Making and Breaking the Law" theme and the "Between Love and Hate" theme.

Ohio University Students for Law, Justice & Culture (SLJC) is a student organization affiliated with Ohio University's Center for Law, Justice, and Culture (CLJC). SLJC seeks to create a cohort of students who will support CLJC programming and academic research endeavors and to create a space for students to discuss issues relating to themes of law, justice, and culture and approach various disciplines through a law and society perspective. Its meetings are at 5 p.m. on Thursdays in the CLJC offices (Bentley Hall 001).
