 THE STUDENT BODY
*Key Win for Affirmative Action* -- A federal appeals court ruled that the
University of Texas is not barred from considering race in admissions even
though the use of a "10 percent" plan helps the university achieve some
level of diversity in its student body. (see
story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=811b835c98&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*Strategic Displacement* -- New research from the National Bureau of
Economic Research suggests that some high school students in Texas have
figured out how to game the "10 percent plan" to get into a flagship -- and
that the net result of this activity is to help white students at the
expense of minority students. (see
story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=88b7dabb7a&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*The Same Boxes to Check* -- The Common Application has rejected a proposal
that it add optional questions on sexual orientation and gender identity. (see
story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=9c8c86ad86&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*How Not to Deal With a Student Mother* -- The chancellor of the University
of California at Davis pledges an investigation and "swift and appropriate
action" over an e-mail in which a class was polled on the grade that should
be given to a student who had to miss some quizzes because she had given
birth. (see story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=213ddeaeb7&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*The Bias of Background Checks* -- Marsha Weissman discusses concerns raised
by a recent survey of college and university officials that found that 66
percent of institutions now collect criminal justice information about
would-be students, usually through self-disclosure on the application. Ms.
Weissman is head of the Center for Community Alternatives whose core mission
is removing barriers to employment, education and full community
reintegration faced by individuals who have been involved in the criminal
justice system.
(see essay<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=b10f44f3c6&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION
*Diversity Hiring* - A lively discussion on our blog "Confessions of a
Community College Dean" was sparked by Dean Dad's statement that "like many
colleges, my college's faculty does not reflect the demographics of either
its students or its community. Bluntly, it's a lot whiter. The disparity is
largest on the faculty side." Join the
discussion<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=2ddbb56e74&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
.

*The Gender Gap on Service* -- A new study finds significant gender gaps in
service assignments and advancement of male and female professors. The study
examines patterns related to specific service duties as well as allocation
of time.
(see story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=06fb1dc1ea&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

* More Than a Coincidence?* -- A new round of tenure denials at DePaul
triggers the strongest response yet from faculty members who are publicly
condemning a "broken tenure system" that they see as fraught with academic
freedom violations, overreaching administrators, racism and sexism. (see
story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=13089b6c98&e=9bdc1fd3d9>)

*Impact of Women on Search Committees* -- A recently completed study
suggests that the impact of having a woman on a hiring or promotion
committee is significant for full professor jobs, but not associate
positions. (see
story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=d6c076a2c1&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*Another Black College Merger Proposed* -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a
Republican, orders a study of the feasibility of merging two neighboring New
Orleans universities that have both struggled to fill classrooms and
graduate students.
(see story<http://insidehighered.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ed1d2ff123b6b83dd97022f88&id=374d226942&e=9bdc1fd3d9>
)

*Change of Heart at Belmont* - While Belmont University's anti-bias policy
prohibited several types of discrimination, sexual orientation was not on
the list. The university recently announced that its board has changed the
policy and that henceforth, discrimination on the basis of sexual
orientation would be officially barred. (see
