Academic Advisor at Saint Louis University

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary: Under general direction, is responsible to provide advising
information throughout the academic year; provides support to students
during the registration process; explores various major and career options
and works to improve the academic performance of University students.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include any and/or all of the following: 

1.	Advises and counsels students for Fall, Spring, and Summer semester
course selections.
2.	Conducts initial orientation appointments with new students each
academic year.
3.	Analyzes student records in preparation for orientation
appointments; advises students of scheduled follow-up appointments.
4.	Participates in office staff development, workshops, programs, and
administrative functions; attends meetings.
5.	Receives and gives referrals to and from faculty and other
University offices for students' major considerations, academic issues, or
personal concerns.
6.	Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

*	Knowledge of University policies and procedures, academic
requirements, campus resources, student life, and support services 
*	Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including
minority and international students 
*	Interpersonal/human relations skills 
*	Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own
decisions 
*	Ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the
University 
*	Ability to identify students' needs for support services in order to
make appropriate referrals 
*	Ability to maintain confidentiality 
*	Ability to operate a personal computer and various software packages
*	Ability to work a flexible schedule

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience equivalent to:

Bachelor's degree; supplemented with one (1) year of related work
experience, which inlcludes six (6) months in an academic setting.
