EDAD 6010 Final (intersections)
Inspirational motivation----> Change-oriented----> Symbolic
1. Inspirational motivation= It is the capacity of the leader to rouse and focus strong positive emotions in their followers and focus that energy on a specific direction.
The difficulties of inspirational motivation is getting everyone to accept how things are and getting everyone to work effectively toward change (=intersection).
As Michael Hammer - former Business Process Re-engineering guru of the last recession - now says: "The human side [of change] is much harder than the technology side and the process side. It's the overwhelming issue" (http://www.strategies-for-managing-change.com/inspirational-motivation.html).
2. Change-oriented= making major changes in goals after examining/interpreting external events (need clear vision-responding to an urgency or proposing innovative programs)
Intersects----> with transformational (creating a coalition to support & implement change)
The difficulties are being able to deal with issues that were not anticipated (perseverance is key for long-term change & adapting to change in the environment).
Must have intersection----> In order to gain commitment with proposed changes there must be inspirational motivation given to direct reports.
3. Symbolic= leaders believe that their paramount task is to provide vision and inspiration (=intersection). They compare the organization to a temple. They employ personal charisma and a dramatic flair to get their “direct reports” excited and committed to the organization’s mission. An effective symbolic leader is a visionary who uses symbols, tells inspirational stories about the organization, and frames experiences in ways that generate hope and provide meaning.
