Subject: $$ Spread the Word ... OU Peer Mentor Recruitment $$

Dear Student Organization Leader,

As a Student Organization Leader, you have close contact with a variety of student leaders on campus and I need your help. Learning Community Programs is preparing for the Fall quarter of 2011 and will hire nearly 150 student leaders to be Peer Mentors. Would you please pass this information to the members of your student organization?

A learning community (LC) is a group of students who take a common set of courses together or share a common experience around their academics. Learning Communities at Ohio University are designed, and proven, to improve the academic success and retention of first-year students by creating learning-based peer networks.

In each community, a group of up to 25 students co-enroll in a set of thematically linked courses. One Peer Mentor is assigned to each of the Learning Communities. For more information about the program, visit the website http://www.ohio.edu/learningcommunities.

Peer Mentors serve as a positive role model and a resource for students in their community for the Fall Quarter, 2011. They will help facilitate the students’ adjustment to Ohio University while working with the students in and out of the classroom.

During Fall Quarter, Peer Mentors:

• Assist the LC instructor with the planning and preparation for a core course in the learning community (1-2 hours a week)

• Plan and organize multiple out-of-class activities

• Contact the faculty who teach the linked courses, obtaining a copy of the class syllabus, and holding study sessions for the students in their community

• Attend bi-weekly meetings with other Peer Mentors

• Attend a one day training on Thursday, September 1st, 2011

• Are compensated for working up to ten hours per week at a starting rate of $7.75 per hour
For more information about the position, or to talk to someone in person about the peer mentor position, please attend one of our information sessions:

• Monday, February 7, 2011, 4-5PM, Baker University Center

• Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 5-6PM, Baker University Center

• Wednesday, February 9, 2011, 7-8PM, Baker University Center

Applications are attached to this email and are also available on our website at http://www.ohio.edu/learningcommunities/peermentor.cfm and are due March 4, 2011. If anyone should have questions about this opportunity please feel free to email or call me at rogersw at ohio.edu or 593-1962. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!

Best Wishes for a Successful Winter Quarter,
