Dear Todd,

I am onboard with your departmental colloquium idea. Please see below for the abstract of a possible presentation by Dr. John Prather and me. Let us know how you want to set it up, or we can find a solution together. Thanks.

A tale of three systems (or What MATH 2120 could have been)

Abstract: Non-decimal place value systems, such as binary systems, have been introduced and studied in many college-level courses in mathematics and computer science, but rarely is this subject front and center of a math education course.  We propose an unconventional course that immerses students in non-decimal thinking by focusing on three different number systems: senary, factoradic, and base-infinity. This course will instill in students a deeper understanding of various concepts in elementary mathematics such as place values, standard algorithms in arithmetic, divisibility tests, prime factorization, and irrationality.  It can serve as a continuation of the entry-level mathematical education course on basic arithmetic and number systems, while elevating these topics to a notch below the undergraduate number theory course.  Because of the unusual subject matters under study, this course is also well-suited for nonstandard pedagogical methods such as discovery-based
and inquiry-based learning.

Subject: [Mathregionals] Follow-up

Hi all,

I wanted to follow up on Dean Plassmann's visit.  This was basically a big experiment to see how well we can manage a Zoom interface with current equipment.  We don't have a really good room set up for this in Morton, and it may be that microphones and audio will be a problem in any hybrid meeting situation.  I will try to get a microphone set up like A&S has for CASRHE meetings.

I also wanted to see how interested people would be in some sort of departmental colloquium series where folks from any of the campuses could share research.  Vinny Just suggested this as a way for people to get to know what folks are involved with research-wise.  Both Athens and RHE would be welcome to participate, and I think it would help people get to know each other a little professionally.

We could try to do this remotely, assuming we figure out a better system for broadcasting (OULN? Some other local hardware? Other ideas? )

Send me an email if it's something you'd like to do, and I'll see what I can do to facilitate.  I think it would be great for us to share about our own work.

Best,

Todd
