To further its mission, the foundation supports innovative investigator-initiated research with the potential to inform improvements to the U.S. healthcare system. Projects must advance the existing knowledge base in the areas of healthcare financing, delivery, management, and/or policy. In the first seven years of the program, the foundation awarded nearly $2.1 million in support of thirty-seven studies.

In 2019-2020. the foundation is making approximately $500,000 available and expects to fund eight to nine studies.

Interested researchers must submit a brief letter of inquiry (LOI) outlining their study idea by 5:00 p.m. EDT on July 9, 2019. (Applications are welcome at any point prior to that deadline.) Full (ten-page) proposals will be invited from a small number of applicants in August and will be due in September. NIHCM will notify grant winners in November, for project start dates as early as January 2020.
