The Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) is responsible for providing collaborative and consultative academic leadership and management in regards to all matters within the COM.  The Dean's primary responsibilities include the academic oversight of all programs within the COM including the curriculum, planning and management of the operating budget, and development and implementation of strategies to promote the growth of the College's biomedical, clinical and research programs. The Dean is also responsible for creating an atmosphere conducive to scholarly pursuits.  The Dean works collaboratively as a member of the university's executive leadership team to advance the college and university strategic plans. The Dean also represents the college and university in the public and professional communities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

*         Educational Excellence - Responsible for assuring that students enrolled in the COM are receiving exceptional educations as evidenced by development and assessment of learning outcomes and graduate measures.
*         Accreditation - Responsible for the oversight of all programmatic accreditation actions within the COM and assisting in the university accreditation processes.
*         Leadership - Responsible for developing and upholding a culture of collegiality and cooperation between COM and the senior leadership of DMU.
*         Academic Integrity - Responsible for creating, implementing and upholding policies and practices that assure the integrity of the degrees granted by the college.
*         Research - Encourage research and scholarly activity on the part of the faculty and students.
*         Faculty/Staff Development - Responsible for the overall recruitment, retention, and development efforts for the faculty and staff in the college.  The goals of such efforts are to create and sustain a motivated, prepared and well-developed work force that is adequately prepared for promotion and tenure decisions and capable of meeting the requirements that are established for them in collaboration with their supervisor and in keeping with the university workload policy.
*         Collaboration - As the pre-clinical faculty are housed in COM, foster collaboration between the academic administrations of COM, the College of Health Sciences and the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery to meet the basic science curricular needs of all programs.
*         Strategic Planning - Responsible for the college's visioning and strategic planning process that will support the university strategic plan.
*         Fiscal Management - Responsible for the fiscal viability of the college and its programs; responsible for the development, oversight, and management of the college and departmental budgets.
*         External Affairs - Responsible for working to create collaborative partnerships with external organizations that can support the growth and educations of the students in COM.
*         Serves as a Campus Security Authority for purposes of Clery Action Crime Reporting.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has oversight for the Dean's Assistant, Associate and Assistant Deans in the college as well as the academic department chairs within the COM.  The Dean of the COM carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing and/or motivating and/or training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  *   Must possess a D.O. degree and possess either ACGME or AOA medical board certification.
  *   Expertise in medical curriculum development and implementation.
  *   Demonstrated excellence in clinical training and patient care essential.
  *   Classroom teaching experience in an academic health center is highly desirable.
  *   A minimum of three years of demonstrated success in previous administrative, chair, or academic leadership roles.
  *   Record of moral and ethical methods of fiscal and human resource management.

  *   Demonstrated strong work ethic.
  *   Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusivity.
  *   Expertise in working collaboratively with faculty and healthcare professionals.
  *   Strong interpersonal skills.
  *   Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
