Hi Fellows and List Serve Members:  U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has appointed D. Keith Watson, DO, FACOS,  Health Policy Fellowship Class of 1997-1998, to serve on the Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME).
Dr. Watson serves as Senior Associate Dean, Academic Affairs at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM).  A 11/2/10 AACOM website article  stated, "since joining OU-COM in 1999, Dr. Watson has also served as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education; associate professor of surgery; and Chair of the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education board. He served as Chair of the 2006 Osteopathic Medical Education Summit, the first national effort to gather representatives of the undergraduate and graduate medical education community from across the country to discuss and develop solutions for pressing medical education issues.  Dr. Watson has served as Chair of the Council on Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions (COPTI), and is a clinical education examiner and team captain for the American Osteopathic Association's Committee on Osteopathic College Accreditation Evaluation Teams.
"COGME advises and makes recommendations to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Commerce.  COGME is made up of 17 members, the majority of them medical and health professionals. COGME's federal representation includes the Assistant Secretary for Health, HHS; the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, HHS; and the Chief Medical Director of the Veterans Administration." Michael L. Kuchera, DO, FAAO, Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2000-2001, has been invited to present his osteopathic research in multiple international venues and is active in international leadership activities.  He was invited to St. Petersburg University (Russian Federation) as a research scholar to hear and provide feedback on the research projects of scientists at the University's Institute of Osteopathy.  He presented the keynote session during Osteopathy and Functional Neurology, hosted by the Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy of Postdoctoral Education. His presentation on Using OMT to Enhance the Lives of Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Patients was selected by the audience as the program's top scientific presentation.



His position as Scientific Co-Chairperson of the 3rd International Fascial Congress to be held in Vancouver in March 2012, warranted the Australian Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine to invite Dr. Kuchera to Sydney.  There he presented a hands-on workshop and updates on his lymphatic research (and that of other osteopathic institutions in the USA).  He then travelled to deliver a lecture on osteopathic research to the faculty and osteopathic students of Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia.



Dr. Kuchera was invited to provide a keynote speech on Nitric Oxide and Pain at the 15th Triennial FIMM Congress held conjointly with the German Manual Medicine Society (DGMM) in Potsdam, Germany. He also presented an evidence-based OMM workshop and five research posters from the Center for Chronic Disorders of Aging (PCOM) where he serves as clinical director.  At the FIMM meeting he was re-elected to a second 4-year term as Secretary-General of the International Federation for Manual/Musculoskeletal Medicine (FIMM) and serves as a consultant to its Health Policy Board.  Dr. Kuchera's health policy paper focused on international osteopathic issues and he serves as the American Academy of Osteopathy's International Affairs chairperson as well as a long term member of the AOA Bureau for International Osteopathic Medical Education and Affairs (BIOMEA).  He is the FIMM liaison to both organizations.

Kenneth J Steier, DO, MPH, MHA, MGH, Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2002-2003 has been named Medical Director of Pre-Surgical Testing at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, an 827-bed voluntary, non-profit tertiary care center serving the greater metropolitan New York area. Dr. Steier is a member of the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Medical Educators and holds federal appointments with the Health Resources and Services Administration and the FDA.


Ashok Tyagi, D.O., MBA, Training in Policy Studies Class of 2010, has accepted a position as a Co-Director of the Intensive Care Unit at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Tyagi is a pulmonary and critical care specialist who will work in cooperation with the pulmonary services group to care for ICU and other critical patients.  Dr. Tyagi graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Kansas City College of Medicine and Biosciences before completing an internal medicine residency at Northside Hospital and Tampa Bay Heart Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Tyagi also obtained a Masters of Business Administration - Healthcare Management at Rockhurst University.  Dr. Tyagi previously served as a hospitalist at MidMichigan Medical Center and as a Pulmonary/Critical Care Chief Fellow at Botsford Hospital.
