Hi Fellows and List Serve Members:

Sonia Rivera-Martinez, D.O., Training in Policy Studies Program (TIPS) Class of 2003-2004, has been elected President of the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS). Dr. Rivera-Martinez currently serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York.

Denise K. Burns, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 2006, was conferred as a Fellow of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) on March 20 at the AAO meeting held in Colorado Springs. Dr. Burns currently serves as an Associate Professor of Osteopathic Medicine and Family Practice at Touro-COM in New York, as Director of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Plus 1 Residency Program at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, and she maintains a private practice in Syosset, New York.

Al Juocys, D.O., Health Policy Fellowship Class of 1998-1999 is the founder and Executive Director of Happy Lung, launched in Lansing, Michigan April 15. According to Dr. Juocys, "Happy Lung aims to be a catalyst in the movement to have Michigan residents make healthy choices for their lungs in order to reduce respiratory illnesses in our state.  By partnering with physicians, businesses, and citizens in our communities, a Happy Lung priority is to see a reduction in the number of Michigan residents purchasing or using tobacco products, regardless of age."  Dr. Juocys is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Medical Network One, a Michigan-based physician's organization and provider of comprehensive health management support programs and interventions offered through physicians, clinicians, health plans, employers, community groups and directly to individuals. Additionally, he is a family physician at Country Creek Commons Family Practice in Rochester, Michigan.

Getting Americans Covered: Ideas From the Field

The Coverage team of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is accepting proposals for projects that promote the Foundation's goal of ensuring that all Americans have stable, affordable health care coverage. The Foundation will allocate up to $2 million to support individual grants of up to $250,000 each. The grant period is expected to begin in November 2010 and extend for up to 24 months.

The recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is expected to make health insurance coverage available to more than 30 million more Americans. Achieving such substantial increases in the number of Americans covered by health insurance will largely depend on the success of efforts to implement the new law effectively. Through this call for proposals, RWJF will fund projects that focus on addressing specific aspects of the new law that present significant opportunities to expand coverage (e.g., Medicaid expansions, subsidy programs for small businesses and individuals who otherwise would not be able to afford insurance, or private-market health insurance reforms).

The following factors will be evaluated when reviewing brief proposals:

*       Likelihood that the proposed project will contribute to the goal of maximizing the number of Americans who benefit from coverage under health reform.
*       Extent to which the project will have national reach. (We will consider state-focused projects but applicant organizations will need to explain how the projects will benefit other states.)
*       Relevance and timeliness of the project to inform and advance health reform implementation efforts.
*       Uniqueness of the project and its intent to address important and possibly overlooked aspects of health care reform.
