GIS GEOGRAPHERS
Graduate Research Assistantship
Available at West Virginia University Fall 2016

The West Virginia GIS Technical Center (WVGTC) (http://www.wvgis.wvu.edu), housed in the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University, is seeking Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) at the Masters or Ph.D. level in Geographic Information Science (GISc).  Successful applicants will assist with projects in the WVGTC and will work toward a higher degree in GISc in the department.  Acceptance into the graduate program in Geography in the department is required by time of appointment (http://geography.wvu.edu/graduate-studies). Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in Geography, Geology, Computer Science or related field or any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the qualification and ability to perform the duties of the position.

GRA Requirements:  Work 20 hours/week and full-time employment available during the summer; hours are flexible with class schedule.  The GRA includes a full tuition waver and stipends are competitive.  The start date is August 2016 though earlier start dates may be negotiable.

Application Due Date:  The review of applicants for a GRA by the WV GIS Technical Center will begin immediately and will remain open until the positions are filled.  Application to the graduate program is also ongoing and should begin upon the offer by the WVGTC of a GRA.

Minimum Qualifications:

*         Demonstrated expertise in GIS and ability to contribute to GIS project development.

*         Good working knowledge of GIS databases and spatial analysis

*         Preference will be given to applicants with programming skills

*         Must meet the geography program graduate student entrance qualifications and be accepted into the MA or Ph.D. program.



Ideal Qualifications:

*         GIS Research:  Demonstrated ability to conduct GIS research on topics ranging from the physical aspects of a region to human activities within a given area.

*         Programming Skills:  Demonstrated knowledge of GIS programming languages, application development/implementation, mobile applications, and online mapping services.

*         Minimal Supervision:  Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

*         Multi-Tasking:  Performs multiple tasks simultaneously in an efficient and effective manner

*         Communications Skills:  Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact with other staff members.
