University of Akron's Geology department has graduate teaching assistantships available beginning in Fall Semester 2015 or Spring 2016. If you have any students who are thinking about graduate school in Geography/Geographic Information Science for the next academic year, please encourage them to consider our program.
Our M.S. degree, which has both thesis and non-thesis tracks, provides students with practical and theoretical knowledge in geospatial techniques, with coursework required in the areas of cartography, remote sensing, and GIS. The Department is well equipped with computer hardware and software for GIS, image processing, and cartography, as well as a myriad of more standard software programs.
Funding opportunities for graduate study in our department are usually in the form of teaching assistantships, but we may also have research assistantships on a more limited basis. Students with strong GIS skills may also obtain internships with local companies or government agencies. We usually evaluate applicants for GA awards in the beginning of March each year for the academic year starting in the fall.
Faculty research interests include the theory and application of geographic information systems, land change science, impacts of shale gas production, and urban food systems. For recent publications and abstracts please view our website: http://www.uakron.edu/geology/. Students may follow links to faculty members. Students interested in additional information concerning our MS in Geography/Geographic Information Sciences program are encouraged to contact the graduate student coordinator, Dr. Linda Barrett, at barrett at uakron.edu<mailto:barrett at uakron.edu>.
We are looking for students who have the drive and curiosity to succeed in graduate school.
