Integrating Computational Biology and Genomics to Unravel Primate Evolution

Abstract
In this seminar, I will be sharing insights from our recent research on the evolutionary dynamics of primate and human genes, particularly focusing on the emergence of de novo genes, their implications for human health in the context of cancer, and the gene loss in primates from various tissues. Our work leverages exhaustive computational methods to process genomic data, aiming to uncover how environmental factors have influenced gene evolution along with divergence of primate species. Furthermore, our investigation extends to the distribution of genes associated with cancer, as well as genes important in brain and immune systems across primate and non-primate species. By examining the relationships between de novo genes, human cancer genes, and environmental conditions, we seek to contribute to the broader understanding of gene emergence and its evolutionary significance.

Biography
Xiao Liang is a PhD Candidate in Computer Science at Virginia Tech. In her doctoral studies, she dedicated her research to understanding the evolution of primate and human genes. Her major research interests particularly lie in de novo gene emergence, environmental impacts on gene evolution during species divergence, and the genetic patterns of human cancers across primate species. At Virginia Tech, Xiao has authored publications on metagenomics pipelines and works on evolutionary genetics. Notable works include a cover paper featured in G3: Genes|Genomes|Genetics, 2023, examining the ancient climate impact on human de novo and cancer genes. Prior to her doctoral studies, Xiao earned her bachelor's degree from Fudan University and master's from University of Washington Tacoma.
