Volunteer your Organization for GO GREEN!

We have a dynamic and exciting opportunity for your organization this year to GO Green! We are looking to expand beyond the traditional Move-In Crew process and give members of your organization the opportunity to serve on the GO Green Team that welcomes our incoming students.

The BIG IDEA behind the Green Opening week is to have our GO Green Team serve as ambassadors for Ohio University. We would love to see members from your organization assist during move-in shifts, as well as other activities throughout the week, such as the Friday night Bobcat Bash and the ceremonial first-year convocation on Monday, followed by the Student Involvement Fair on College Green.

?Why should my student organization do this?? you may ask. There are several benefits to being a part of the GO Green Team this year:

This is a great service opportunity for your organization.

This is also a great opportunity to make first contacts with potential members for your student organization ? you will be permitted to lightly promote your organization and hand out flyers, so long as the first-year students are not feeling harassed.

Members of your organization who live in residence halls will get to move into their residence hall early.

Because we will be asking members of the GO Green Team to attend evening events, helpers will get to sign-up for shorter move-in shifts.

Your members will each get a really cool t-shirt with a new, fashionable design that says GO Green!

Students will have the chance to win the title of Move-In Helper of the Year, based on the number of referrals GO Green Team members receive from parents, which will result in a prize package of $100 in Bobcat Cash and potentially other special recognition! Other amenities are currently being explored and will be determined as the budget is developed.

Overall, this is going to be a really fun atmosphere this year with lots of music, enthusiasm and involvement from several members of the Ohio University Community.

Lastly, we are counting on YOU for help by serving as ambassadors for Ohio University and making our new students feel WELCOME!

If your student group is interested in serving on this next year?s GO Green Team, please contact Jenn Grimm at jennHgrimm at gmail.com or 740-593-1800 by Noon on Friday, May 28. We will be hosting an information session for GO Green Team members on Tuesday, June 1 at 1pm in Walter Hall, Room 245. We would like to see the majority of your organization?s volunteers present at this meeting so we can further explain our VISION, state expectations and provide valuable information. In addition, we will need ALL NAMES of your organization?s GO Green Team members by AUGUST 1 (in order to put together assignments).

Please do not hesitate to contact Bev Wyatt (wyatt at ohio.edu) from Residential Housing or Jenn Grimm (jennHgrimm at gmail.com) from the Dean of Students Office with any questions you may have. We very much look forward to partnering with your student group as we WELCOME our new students during Ohio University?s GO Green Week!

Malcom X Celebration

Malcolm X was an African American leader and prominent figure in the Nation of Islam, who articulated concepts of race pride and black nationalism in the early 1960s.

Hip Hop Congress acknowledges the birthday of Malcolm X and how his views influenced the culture of early hip hop. Through his oratory genius and direct action towards the discrimination he witnessed in America, Malcolm X became the voice of the oppressed.

Our celebration includes:

Date: Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Nelson Commons

-Musical, spoken word, and dance performances by local talent.
-Speakers and exhibitors from community organizations whose missions match the overall mission of the event.
-CONCERT BY CINCINNATI'S "LYRICAL INSURRECTION"!!!
The Lyrical Insurrection was voted best open mic in the city of Cincinnati in "Cincinnati Magazine" and "City Beat". They have performed for Black Ice from Def Poetry, had many other Def Poets grace their stage, and Umar Bin Hassan of The Last Poets as well. They've performed in Columbus, Yellow Springs, Texas, Atlanta, Chicago and NYC.

MAY 19th: Malcolm X's Birthday

-Please wear black to recognize X's legacy.

The events are designed to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Malcolm X (El Hajj Malik El Shabazz) in a meaningful way.

Students and community organizations are welcome to participate and attend. WANT TO BE INVOLVED? Email Sydney Epps at se343707 at ohio.edu.
