Hello all!

We just found another really exciting course being offered in the Spring for those who still are looking for a class to fulfill their Diversity Studies Certificate requirements! It's an English course focusing on Indigenous literature. Please see description below:

ENG 3850 - Writing About Culture and Society (6590)

MWF 2-2:55 PM

This course focuses on North American Indigenous peoples. Students will grapple with issues of rhetorical sovereignty and language loss, looking particularly the work being done to preserve and reinvigorate endangered languages and cultures. and to sustain these peoples and cultures as they are constantly resisting colonization and assimilation. Students will investigate places, languages, and ways of being, examining how history and culture shape ways of being, languages, and rhetorics. Students will also look at how colonization and assimilation have led to acts of survivance, calls for acknowledged Indigenous sovereign nations and respect for the treaties made with these nations, and the coming together of peoples to revitalize languages and cultures to save them from extinction. These investigations will lead students to an early understanding of how cultural, community, and ecosystem literacies are passed down and how assimilationist practices, such as boarding schools, have interrupted the process and caused generational trauma. This course asks students to look at the reality of language and culture loss faced by Indigenous peoples, to look at the success stories of revitalization, and to work on ways that they, as students outside of these communities, can become allies and help in the revitalization efforts. This course is part of the Writing Certificate.

For those of you also interested in the Navajo Nation trip, this would be great preparation.

As always I'm here to answer any questions you might have about the certificate - don't hesitate to email. Best wishes for a relaxing break!
