*Defining Counselor Professional Identity: What Makes Us Unique Among the
Mental Health Professions?*<http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=23648580&msgid=103806&act=Y822&c=1225671&destination=https%3A%2F%2Fwww1.gotomeeting.com%2Fregister%2F763553665>presented
by Dr. Jason King, December 14, 2012, 12-1 PM EST

The counseling profession has enjoyed a rich 100 year history in servicing
individuals, families, groups, and communities. However, members of this
profession are struggling to successfully navigate Erikson’s identity
versus confusion adolescent stage of psychosocial development as many are
asking, “Who are we?” Counselors are experiencing a professional identity
crisis as they endeavor to market their niche in contrast to psychologists,
marriage and family therapists, and social workers. This webinar will share
results from a recent ethnographic content analysis that studied the
current ethical codes of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the
American Psychological Association (APA), the American Association for
Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and the National Association of Social
Workers (NASW).

Dr. Jason King is Core Faculty for Walden University’s CACREP-accredited
Mental Health Counseling Program. He is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health
Counselor, an Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a Certified Advanced
Facilitator. He received his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision
from Capella University and his CACREP master’s degree in Mental Health
Counseling from the University of Phoenix. Dr. King currently serves as the
Governor-appointed Chair of the Utah licensure board for Clinical Mental
Health Counselors and he served as DSM-5 Revision Task Force committee
member for AMHCA and ACA. Dr. King received the 2011 ACES Outstanding
Graduate Student Leadership Award and the 2012 AMHCA Mental Health
Counselor of the Year Award. He was part of the Doctoral team that received
second place in the 2010-2011 ACA graduate student ethics essay contest.
Dr. King served as a CSI Fellow and Intern in 2005-2006 and is former
president of the CSI chapters for Capella University and the University of
Phoenix. His research interests include professional identity, sanctioned
supervision, and counseling outcomes.
