[CPN] Membership of the International Committee on bionomenclature

I just received two messages from Paddy Patterson addressing our concerns about funding and meetings.

In answer to my question about funding to attend meetings, Paddy wrote:  "The Committee gets a budget (meager) from IUBS, and this has been sufficient to support attendance at meetings."

In answer to Michel's question about when and where the next meeting will be, Paddy wrote:

"We do not know.    In essence, the business of the current program (BioCode) has come to an end with the last meeting (a little bureaucracy remains), three new themes will be proposed to IUBS in China in July. They are 'Ambiregnal issues', 'Registration issues' and 'Taxa with molecular (only) identities'.  If IUBS endorses one of more of those programs, they will allocate some funds, and we would expect to have one meeting per year for each funded program.  Ambiregnal is intended to discuss those protists that some have applied BotCode to and others have applied ZooCode to; but it could be interpreted as any taxa that might be subject to both type-based codes and Phylocode ... and so we might be able to exploit this to create a much-needed positive dialog."

The discrepancy between Paddy's reply and Nico's recent message may have to do with the structure of IUBS.  I think Nico was referring to the meeting of IUBS as a whole this summer in China, but the committee on BioNomenclature is apparently a part of IUBS that will meet separately in the future.  It appears from Paddy's comments that there will be funding to attend these future committee meetings, though it isn't known yet where or when they will take place.  Nico, if I have misinterpreted the situation, please clarify it.

There is no funding for attending and I personally feel that right now we have enough on our plate and this invitation comes way too late. Once the Code is out, I think we can be more aggressive in our participation to these meetings. Dear Phil,

    I suppose that this person would need to attend the meeting of the committee on bionomenclature. Where and when will that be? And given that the ISPN has little financing, that person would need to finance himself, I suppose. That would be a problem for me, as the grant support has been dwindling steadily in France, in the last few years. So, I think that we need to know where and when the next meeting will be, and if any of us is interested in attending that meeting.

As you probably know, the IUBS committee on BioNomenclature met in Berlin last week.  The terms of office of David Hawksworth and Werner Greuter came to an end, and Sandra Knapp was appointed chair of the committee, and I was appointed Secretary.

We remain very keen to ensure that the committee is not just about the type-based codes, and want to ensure that Phylocode has a strong voice on the committee.

That said, Phylocode has not been represented in the last two meetings.  I wonder if it might be appropriate to identify a new representative for Phylocode.  I'd be pleased to receive any thoughts that you might have.
