Dear Secondary School Counselor,

My name is Jennifer Bonney, and I am a secondary school counselor in Virginia and a doctoral candidate in the Counselor Education and Supervision program at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Under the supervision of Dr. Tim Grothaus, an associate professor at ODU, I am conducting a research study to explore the experiences of secondary school counselors advocating for LGBTQIA+ students in states with anti-LGBTQIA+ laws. Your participation in this study is strictly voluntary. You are free to withdraw at any time without consequence or penalty. Also, at the completion of your participation you will receive a $50 Visa gift card.

Eligibility: To be considered as a participant, you must meet the following criteria: (a) be a licensed/credentialed secondary school counselor for a minimum of one year employed in a public secondary school in the United States, (b) be employed in a state with anti-LGBTQIA+ laws, and (c) self-identify as an advocate for LGBTQIA+ students based on the following definition: actively working to identify and change the structure of power and systems of inequality within the status quo that negatively impact lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual students in order to ensure equality and inclusivity. Advocacy interventions may take place at the individual, small group, classroom, school, district, city, state, and federal levels.

Time/Participation Requirements: You will be asked to complete the following:

  1. Complete the Qualtrics consent form and demographic questionnaire (10-15 minutes)

https://odu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bHnqML6U0BDPKPY

2. At a later date, complete an individual interview via Zoom (45–60 minutes) (date and time based on participant availability) where you will be asked a series of semi-structured questions pertaining to your experience as a secondary school counselor engaging in LGBTQIA+ advocacy. The interview will be audio and video recorded, and transcribed.
3. At a later date, review the interview transcript for accuracy (10-20 minutes).

Confidentiality: Any information you provide will remain anonymous and confidential within the confines of the law. To best protect your identity, you will not be asked to provide your name, name of your school, or the name of your school district. Instead, pseudonyms will be used. All interview audio and video recordings will be destroyed upon completion of the study. For full confidentiality disclosure, see informed consent via Qualtrics.

If you have any questions about the study or your participation, please contact me via email at jbonn002 at odu.edu<mailto:jbonn002 at odu.edu> . Thank you for your consideration.
