ACA and the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition celebrate the passage of the Mental Health Access Improvemnt Act.

  *   The passage of the Mental Health Access Improvement Act represents a major milestone for individual mental health counselors (MHCs) and marriage and family therapists (MFTs) who – after a long advocacy effort – are now recognized providers in the nation’s largest health insurance program. This means that MFTs and MHCs will be able to bill Medicare directly for covered services rendered to seniors and eligible people with disabilities.

To continue to educate members about the legislation, ACA — in conjunction with our partners in the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition — will present the Medicare 501 webinar, “New Engagement Opportunities for Community Behavioral Health Centers with Counselors and MFTs Under Medicare,” on October 5 at 12 p.m. Eastern.

This webinar will provide information about the primary roles that community behavioral health centers play in providing mental health and substance use services to improve quality of life for older adults with mental health conditions. It will also describe the skills and experience of MFTs and counselors and how they can address the needs of community behavioral health centers in serving Medicare beneficiaries with mental health conditions.

  *   ACA submitted comments in response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issue Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. In the letter, ACA supports CMS' inclusion of Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and provided recommendations for counselors.
