Personality Type (MBTI(r)) and Empathy in Counseling Students



Dear Graduate Student:



This email is from Kathleen Kutsko, doctoral candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at Ohio University.  I am seeking your help in completing a study on counseling students, which will fulfill the partial requirements for my Ph.D. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between personality type and empathy to understand if personality type can predict empathy.  Personality Type will be measured using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (r) (MBTI(r)). Empathy will be measured using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI).



I am inviting all Masters and Doctoral level students in CACREP accredited counseling programs to participate. Individually, you may benefit by understanding yourself better, thereby increasing your self-awareness as an individual and as a professional counselor. This research will assist counselor educators in providing more type targeted teaching strategies to enhance counseling student empathy.  The empathetic counselor is more likely to create successful therapeutic relationships with their clients, with the result of better counseling outcomes for the client. There are no known risks to participants in this study.



To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in a CACREP accredited Counselor Education and Supervision program. This online assessment process will take approximately 30 - 40 minutes or less. You can withdraw at any time during and after data collection.



All information is confidential and questionnaires will be coded to protect anonymity and
