Subject: Counseling Position at IUPUI
Dear Dr. Robinson,
I am writing you today to announce that our School Counseling program at Indiana University, Indianapolis campus (IUPUI) is conducting a search for a Clinical Assistant Professor (see attachment). I wanted to reach out to you especially because of your program's strong reputation in counselor education and its emphasis in social justice.
I am excited about this position for a few reasons. First, I personally transferred my line from the IU Bloomington campus 8 years ago with the express purpose of creating an urban- and social justice-oriented school counseling program. Over these past 8 years, the program has seen many changes in its emphasis in the classroom; we continue to make these changes in teaching, as well as in practices outside of the school. Second, our School of Education admitted its fourth cohort of Ph.D. students in the newly minted Urban Education Studies Program --- an exceptional, research oriented program that is racially/ethnically diverse and whose students have already shown themselves to be strong advocate-scholar-practitioners. Notably, a fair number of these students have backgrounds in and are pursuing a minor in Counselor Education. We hope that prospective candidates for the position are intrigued by the opportunity to work with these students. Third, we have created partnerships in our urban schools that lend well to research and practice opportunities.
Speaking on behalf of the IUPUI counseling faculty in the program, I know that the prospect of having a strong, urban- and social justice-oriented colleague is thrilling as we continue to build on a mission we hold dear. We kindly ask that you help spread the word of this job opening with your students and colleagues.
Thank you for your help in assisting us with this important search. Please also feel free to contact me or my colleague Flip Robison if you any questions.
Chalmer Thompson
