Located in the heart of downtown Richmond, Virginia, VCU is a premier urban, public research institution with an enrollment of more than 31,000 students within a culturally diverse setting.  Recently voted as the "Best River Town in America" by Outside magazine, Richmond is a vibrant, prosperous metropolitan area of approximately one million people within a short driving distance from Washington, D.C., Virginia Beach, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.   The Department of Rehabilitation Counseling's M.S. program is ranked #7 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Description:  The Department of Rehabilitation Counseling seeks to fill an Assistant/Associate Professor counselor education position; the proposed hire date is August 16, 2014.  This is a nine-month, tenure track position which entails teaching, scholarship, and service in a CORE-accredited master's degree program which is expanding to 60 credits with added emphasis on mental health counseling.  The successful candidate will be a creative, dynamic, and resourceful scholar and educator who demonstrates ability to perform the following duties and responsibilities:  (1) teach master's and doctoral level courses related to rehabilitation and mental health counseling in both on-campus and distance learning formats; (2) conduct research projects; (3) obtain external funding to support research and education; (4) advise and mentor master's and doctoral level students; and (5) provide service to the university, community, and profession.

Established in 1955, the VCU Department of Rehabilitation Counseling serves as a national leader in the professional preparation of counselors who will exercise skill and competence on a high ethical level and with personal integrity. The Department seeks to perpetuate active programs of research and service, and maintain high levels of teaching competence. In partnership with students, community agencies, and consumer and professional organizations, the Department endeavors to enhance the personal, social, and economic independence of individuals with disabilities.  We offer an M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling, postgraduate Advanced Certificate in Professional Counseling, and Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Leadership.  Enrollment in these programs is approximately 155 students.  The Department is situated in the School of Allied Health Professions on the VCU Medical Center Campus.  VCU is designated by the Carnegie Foundation to the combined statuses of "Research University, Very High Research Activity" and "Community Engaged Campus."

Qualifications:  Minimum qualifications:
*       Earned doctorate in rehabilitation counseling, counselor education, or a closely related field
*       Eligibility for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential
*       Eligibility for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential, or willingness to achieve eligibility within a reasonable period of time
*       Evidence of the capacity for successful scholarship, graduate level teaching, and grant writing
*       Counseling experience and clear evidence of a professional counseling identity
*        Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred qualifications:
*       Current possession of the LPC credential in Virginia
*       Current eligibility for the CRC credential
*       Graduation from a CACREP-accredited doctoral program
*       Expertise in teaching counseling theories and techniques, human growth and development, group counseling, and family counseling.

Research expectations:  At the Assistant Professor level, the faculty member will be required to demonstrate an established research agenda, clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the Department.

At the Associate Professor level, the faculty member will be required to demonstrate a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the Department.
