Show, by your actions, that you choose peace over war, freedom over oppression, voice over silence, service over self-interest, respect over advantage, cooperation over competition, action over passivity, diversity over uniformity, and justice over all.

Subject: Student advocacy

Mt students put this memo together and I thought it was worthwhile sharing!

Due to the recent, tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, there has been heightened awareness and a growing need for school counselors. School counselors are uniquely trained to identify and assist students who are having academic and social difficulties, to work with students in crisis, and to collaborate with teachers and parents to support and advocate for students.

Currently there is no mandate for school counselors in our schools. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) recommends a ratio of 250 students to 1 school counselor. Most schools DO NOT come close to that recommendation and in some schools there are NO school counselors.

Let's do something now to help the mental health and well-being of our children by advocating that all schools SHOULD INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FULL TIME COUNSELORS available to all students, and by mandating a student/counselor ratio that makes effective counseling accessible to all students.

ASCA has prepared a statement to this effect to reduce the gun violence in our schools. Please click on the link for more information:

ASCA Statement on President's Proposal to Reduce Gun Violence<http://www.schoolcounselor.org/files/reducegunviolence.pdf%20>

PLEASE HELP BY CONTACTING SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, SUPERINTENDENTS, AND YOUR LOCAL LEGISLATORS. ASK THEM TO SUPPORT HIRING MORE SCHOOL COUNSELORS.
