Subject: Referral suggestions: Director of Counseling & Health

Greetings, Tracy - - I know you have probably seen the announcement of this position, but wanted to circle back more directly to solicit your referral suggestions of individuals you think are positioned for success as Director of Counseling & Health at Clarkson University.

We're looking for someone who is eager and able to balance administrative/leadership responsibility with an active clinical counseling practice. Also needed is someone who can think creatively to incorporate, design, and implement outreach initiatives to expand the services of the center beyond just one-on-one support.

There's a very solid foundation to build upon at Clarkson and additional resources are being added to expand the capacity of counseling services. As of the fall semester, there will be three full-time, 10 month licensed mental health counselors in place reporting to the Director. In the last year, Counseling and Health services have been co-located in adjoining suites and this has facilitated increased collaboration, communication, and coordinated support to students. The Director is the senior counseling clinician and also directly manages the contract that the University has in place with the local hospital that provides medical health services staffing on the Clarkson campus.

Clarkson University is a small, friendly research institution located in the foothills of the Adirondacks and close to the St. Lawrence Seaway - - a very attractive locale for those who enjoy the outdoors, four-season recreation, and the serenity that a setting surrounded by natural beauty affords. As a college town with three other nearby higher ed institutions, Potsdam, New York offers a delightfully pleasant and rich, small town environment.

Are there individuals in your network whom you think would bring the skills and abilities needed for in this leadership role? Your referral suggestions will be highly valued. Application review begins on August 26th. Many thanks for your support; I'll look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Valerie

Clarkson University
Director of Counseling & Health

Clarkson University is the third smallest nationally ranked research university and the institution of choice for more than 3,400 enterprising, high-ability undergraduate and graduate students. Through its 50+ programs, Clarkson educates remarkably effective engineers, scientists, health professionals, business people, and creative leaders who easily defy convention and engage-"What's next." Clarkson does this by creating an exceptionally demanding, boundary-spanning experience in an entrepreneurial community known for its core values, technology intensive resources, and appreciation of the Adirondack Park that lies just beyond its doorstep. Located in the college town of Potsdam, NY with three other universities nearby, Clarkson community members enjoy a constantly changing social and intellectual quality of life largely influenced by proximity to the north slope of the Adirondacks; easy access to Lake Placid as well as two major cities-Ottawa and Montreal, Canada; and a high level of regional camaraderie that encourages innovative partnerships in small business development, arts, tourism, recreation, agriculture, and green energy.

The Position
Reporting directly to the Vice President for University Outreach & Student Affairs, the Director of Counseling & Health is responsible for the overall leadership, vision, and management of the Student Counseling & Health Center in support of the overall personal growth, development, and wellness of Clarkson students, while assuring the Center is in step with current national best practices. The Director will have primary management responsibility for the Counseling Services, maintain a clinical practice serving students directly, coordinate with external mental health providers, and facilitate educational programs and outreach to the campus community. Administrative responsibilities include strategic planning; data collection and outcomes assessment; budget management; staff development, supervision, and evaluation; and oversight of the Canton-Potsdam Hospital contract for health services. Direct reports include one assistant director of counseling and two counselors (all licensed mental health counselors), an administrative assistant, and the Director of Health Services who manages the day-to-day operations of the health services side of the Center. Building and maintaining collaborative working relationships between the Center and the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Success Center, other administrative offices, faculty, staff, and students is an ongoing priority for the Director of Counseling & Health.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a master's degree in clinical social work (LCSW), psychiatric-mental health nursing (APRN), or related field and be eligible to obtain New York licensure at the time of hire. Demonstrated managerial leadership and significant clinical experience are required. Experience working in a higher education environment and a track record of innovation in addressing rising counseling and mental health needs of a college-aged population strongly preferred. Cultural competency, a collaborative and adaptable working style, effective communication and presentation skills, commitment to uphold professional ethical standards, as well as an ability to design and lead educational programs and community outreach will also be important considerations in the selection of the Director of Counseling & Health.

Application and Nomination
Review of applications will begin August 26, 2013 and will continue until the position is filled. To apply, a resume with an accompanying cover letter must be submitted via the SJG website at www.spelmanandjohnson.com<http://www.spelmanandjohnson.com> under the link Open Positions.
