Show, by your actions, that you choose peace over war, freedom over
oppression, voice over silence, service over self-interest, respect over
advantage, cooperation over competition, action over passivity, diversity
over uniformity, and justice over all.

Subject: Victory for Counselors in Ohio - School Counselor Ratios /
Definition

OCA Members,
School Counselors in Ohio had a significant victory on Friday, July 17th.
The Ohio General Assembly adopted the Governor's evidenced-based model of
school funding/reform and the Governor signed the bill into law.

The bill established a formula for school districts to follow; which
included a school counselor to student ratio of 1 to 250 for grades 6 - 12
beginning in 2012.

This is the first ratio for school counselors, since the early 1980's. In
addition, counselors have been advocating for a definition of the role of a
school counselor in the law, and this bill also provides a definition for
school counselors.

Be sure to congratulate the work done by counselors across the state, in
particular the work by the Ohio School Counselor Association and by the
Towner Policy Group, as well as the counselors, students, and counselor
educators who sent letters, met with their representatives, and traveled to
Columbus to provide testimony.

This is truly a significant accomplishment for counseling in Ohio!

Sincerely,
Jake J. Protivnak, Ph.D.
Ohio Counseling Association - President
