New OMT coding and billing guidance issued by AOA
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has released a new policy that provides guidelines for physicians, office staff and payers regarding documentation, coverage and payment for Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). The-nine page document includes medical record documentation examples for OMT, the new ICD-10 codes, techniques, vignettes and coding examples, including E/M service coding. The policy can be found on the AOA website<http://www.osteopathic.org/inside-aoa/about/leadership/aoa-policy-search/Documents/H647-A2015-OMT-COVERAGE-DETERMINATION-GUIDANCE.pdf>.

Videoconference offers review of OMT coding and billing
Clinical faculty are invited to attend a videoconference with Diane Zucker, M.Ed., a health care compliance and billing consultant, to review OMT documentation and coding. The session will also review the basics of E&M office and hospital locations and the correct use of modifier -25. The conference will take place Thursday, Jan. 28 from 12 - 1 p.m. Physicians who live near the Heritage College, Cleveland campus may attend in person. To connect by video, contact Heritage College Telehealth Director Dan Smith (smithd6 at ohio.edu<mailto:smithd6 at ohio.edu>) or Telehealth Distance Learning Coordinator Jessica Makosky (street at ohio.edu<mailto:street at ohio.edu>). For additional information contact, CORE OPP Coordinator Becky Martin (martinb4 at ohio.edu).

Can MDs supervise OMT? If so, must MDs have training in OMT?
Clinical Informatics Specialist Kathy Jefford in the Heritage College Office of Academic Affairs offers the following response: "Like D.O.s, M.D.s are fully licensed physicians in the practice of medicine and surgery, and according to their clinical level of training, may supervise or report the OMT codes based on their training. Like other services, such as physical therapy, physicians are allowed to perform those services according to their training. The physician makes the determination based on their comfort level supervising and/or performing the service and that judgment should have some defensible basis. Hence, it would be preferable to have a D.O. or M.D. with some training and experience in OMT and manual medicine. Ultimately, it is left up to the supervising physician to decide whether they are qualified to supervise or not. Therefore, the answer will depend on the details of the situation. There is no specific CMS guidance regarding OMT supervision." Contact Director of Osteopathic Integration Stevan Walkowski, D.O., (walkowsk at ohio.edu) for more information about supervising osteopathic medical students.

Program helps impaired med students
Are you concerned that a medical student may be struggling with alcoholism, severe stress or a psychiatric illness? If so, you can refer the student to the Heritage College Medical Student Assistance Program (MSAP), which was created to support the health and well-being of students and to help them succeed academically and professionally. Students, faculty or staff can make a referral, which will initiate a meeting between the MSAP committee and the student. If the committee suspects the student is impaired, the student will be referred to an external expert for treatment. To make a referral, contact any one of the MSAP committee members: Assistant Professor of Social Medicine Joseph Bianco, Ph.D. (bianco at ohio.edu); Assistant Professor of Geriatrics Kelly Coon, D.O. ('95) (coonk at ohio.edu); Multimedia Producer Director Mark Loudin (loudin at ohio.edu); Assistant Professor of Physiology Leslie Consitt, Ph.D. (consitt at ohio.edu).; Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Nick Okada, Ph.D. (okada at ohio.edu); and Assistant Director of Student Affairs in Dublin Andrea Brunson (brunson at ohio.edu).
