Dear Executive Members,

I would like to officially nominate Dr. Hogan Sherrow for the 2014 African
Heroes Award.

Dr. Hogan Sherrow started The Empower Campaign while finishing his
graduate work in Uganda in 2004. When Hogan was hired at Ohio University in
2006, he brought Empower with him to Athens. Empower is now on four
campuses throughout Ohio, and provides students with a unique opportunity
to gain real-world experience, while making a difference in the lives of
some of Africa’s most vulnerable children.

The Empower Campaign, a program of EDUCATE Foundation, Inc. This holistic,
community and school based initiative is designed to help children,
including those that are orphaned or vulnerable, receive an education in
Uganda.

We require that all communities and schools we partner with are working
to protect their environment.
We provide a safe and sound place to attend school by building and
reconstructing debilitated schools.
We provide educational materials for students and teachers at our
partner schools.
We provide access to health care and HIV testing and guidance
counseling at our partner schools.

Dr. Sherrow is a good candidate for the African Hero Award because he
exemplifies the attributes desirable in an African/Africanist hero. Dr.
Sherrow has dedicated his time to the professional development of his
African and Africanist counterparts on the African continent.

Sincerely,
Erin Noell
