Dear Colleagues
I have a few suggestions for this Mahabharata Seminar. I am sharing these
here,

  1. Inter–textual Aspects of Epics, Purāṇas and Smṛtis with special focus on Dharma
(Vyāsa traditionally being recognised as an author of Mbh. and Purāṇas this will be a significant exercise to compare the materials (episodes) from Purāṇas and MBH. It is equally true for Smṛtis. These are identified as Dharmagranthas. Comparison of these three genres will produce significant insights to understand the inter–textual aspects.)

  1. Contribution of Epics to critical theory of classical poetry “kāvya”
  2. Mahābhārata as an Upajīvya text (this is kind of retelling of the text)
  3. Retellings of the Mbh and Rām in Sanskrit
(Bhāsa’s Sanskrit dramas are based on the Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa, mainly on Mbh. Kṣemendra, Bhavabhūti, Kālidāsa etc are a few others who contribute in this. This theme also can be converted into a small project in which separate volumes can be published like “Argument and Design” for Upākhyānas. With some interesting title like Mahābhārata from Vyāsa to Bhāsa. There are some individual works published on this line. But I think it is worth to have a volume of Sanskrit retellings of Rām. and Mbh.)

  1. Regional Languages of India –– Retellings of the RAM and MBH
(Retellings of the RAM and MBH could be a theme for individual conference)

  1. Representation of regional Bhakti movements based on Epics and Purāṇas
(Bhāgavata Saṃpradāya, Vārakarī Saṃpradāya from Maharashtra)
Regards,
Jahnavi
