Hi all,

Some of you may be interested in seminars about HeLa cells, the first human
cells in culture, this week. See below. It does not say how long a
seminar would be, but they are usually about one hour. The tomorrow¹s
seminar will fulfill the academic seminar requirement for your initiation.

Best,

Soichi

Subject: HeLa Cells Author to Speak at Ohio University

Henrietta Lacks was a tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave
ancestors, yet her cells -- taken without her knowledge -- became one of the
most important tools in medicine. The first "immortal" human cells grown in
culture, her cells -- known as "HeLa cells" -- are still alive today, though
she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for
developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the
effects of the atom bomb; helped lead to important advances like in vitro
fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by
the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an
unmarked grave. And though her cells launched multimillion-dollars in sales
of human biological materials, her family -- who often can't even afford
health insurance -- never saw any of the profits. In her new book, "The
Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," author Rebecca Skloot tells the story of
Henrietta, the science behind her amazing cells, and the family she left
behind. The book is currently #3 on the New York Times bestseller list.

Skloot will be giving two appearances this week at Ohio University. We would
appreciate if you might pass this information along to you classes :

Monday, Noon: Talk to Department of Social Medicine in the College
of Medicine / Irvine 194

Tuesday, 6 pm: ³The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,² sponsored by
