Dear Students,

The following is an update from Steve Wood, VP and Chief Facilities Officer. Due to some student and faculty concerns, I had asked about any health precautions such as respirator masks that should be taken in the basement. Here is his reply:

We have flood mopped (a heavy application) all floors with a hospital grade disinfectant nightly since the first occurrence and will continue to use the product until the tile has been replaced/repaired. The carpet was also extracted with the same disinfectant mid-week last week. That carpet is slated for removal, once it is removed we will clean the exposed concrete with the same process as above. We do not believe that there are concerns give the products that we are using on a nightly basis.

Additionally, we sent an Environmental Health & Safety specialist, who evaluates moisture damage due to water infiltration of work spaces regardless of the source, to Kantner to perform an extensive examination of the areas involved after the flooding that occurred recently, initially and after the final episode. His findings revealed that the damage was minimal with only minor wicking (drawing up of moisture) into the dry wall in the affected areas and to some carpet. He removed the cove base finish to make these determinations and to allow a drying out period of the dry wall. He recommended, once the dry wall was dry, to remove the bottom 1-2 inches of the dry wall to prevent any possible wicking action in the future and to remove/replace the carpet. He also recommended an Indoor Air Quality test be completed and is currently planned after the drying out period, removal of the bottom of the dry wall and replacement of the cove base. This IAQ can be moved up sooner, if that is preferred.

Regarding the wearing of face masks, we do not feel this is necessary. There are no known health concerns at this time in the Kantner basement specific to the flooding that recently occurred.

The Dept. of Safety does recommend anyone wear a comfort mask to prevent the spread of disease when respiratory bacterial or viral infections are of concern.

Please feel free to disseminate this information to students, faculty, and staff.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
