Thanks, Michael and Rachel.

Do we have a succinct response if people ask about next season?

It might seem obvious, but please don't mention any possible changes to students.

Merri

Dear Faculty and Staff,

We will make this the subject of our faculty meeting on Monday, September 17th, which Merri just scheduled today. I’ve been in close communication about this development and believe that the President will continue to support all the work that has gone into Tantrum over the past four years, whether or not Dublin remains in the equation.

I’m in Delaware until the 15th, but please feel free to reach out if you have questions or want to discuss. I’m available mornings till noon on most days.

All the best,

Michael

Subject: Important message regarding Tantrum

Dear Theater faculty and staff,

I wanted to reach out today about some Tantrum news. As many of you know, for the past few months there has been a resolution in front of the Dublin City Council that would allow the city to partner with OU to fund a position to bring visibility to a cultural arts center. In the July council meeting, we were surprised when several council members expressed their disapproval for the creation of this position and the resolution was tabled and then delayed. A new facility built by the city of Dublin has always been a necessary component of the plan for a sustainable professional theater there and OU moved forward with Tantrum in Dublin with assurances that the City had identified a cultural arts center as one of their key goals. We all understand that fundraising for a cultural arts center is an incredibly ambitious project, with many potential pitfalls.

Without an excited and unanimously approving council, a successful campaign would be unlikely and the timeline would be quite extended. It is with this in mind that the President has asked the City to remove the resolution from consideration for the time being. We’ll now begin to assess our options for Tantrum remaining in Dublin as well as options for alternatives that would allow the Theater Division to produce professional theater here in Athens with the kind of excellence that Tantrum has allowed in its first three years.

Your work in Tantrum has been extraordinary and President Nellis has expressed such enthusiasm for your work. He has an understanding of the context and history of professional theater at OU and is committed to finding a solution that will not only meet the U/RTA requirements, but will also allow us to invest in a highly positive future for Ohio University theater. I’m looking forward to continuing this conversation with you over the next few weeks and months. Please feel free to reach out to us or to Rachel with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank you again for your extraordinary commitment to our students and our art,

Matthew and Michael
