Visiting Artist Robert Sember (of sound art collective Ultra-red) will be at Ohio University March 27-29, 2013

Events include a listening and field recording workshop, a listening session (in Shawnee, Ohio), and a public lecture

All events are free and open to the public

A sound workshop consisting of introductions, listening protocols, and a soundwalk, to develop a question that will guide recordings to be made in anticipation of the Friday listening session.

Sember will present a series of propositions formulated by the members of Ultra-red regarding organized sound, organized listening and collective investigations. These propositions will be discussed in the context of a series of long-term Ultra-red projects, particularly the ongoing work with members of New York City House and Ballroom scene.

A listening session using recordings made following Wednesday's workshop.

It is possible to attend either or both of the workshops. Those participating in both workshops will also have the opportunity to make and edit field recordings on Thursday, March 28. Robert Sember is an artist, researcher, and member of the sound art collective Ultra-red, which organizes projects around constituencies involved in migrant rights, the AIDS crisis, fair housing, and anti-racism. In 2009-2010 he was a Fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School, New York City. Sember has taught at Columbia University, New York City; the University of California, Los Angeles; the Center for HIV/AIDS Networking, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban; Ohio University, Athens; and, the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam. He currently teaches at The New School's Eugene Lang College, New York. Recent projects with Ultra-red include: Vogue'ology (2010) on view in the FORMER WEST Research Exhibition Vectors of the Possible, BAK, Utrecht, 2010; a 2009 residency at Raven Row in London, which produced a multi-year series of sound investigations titled School of Echoes; and SILENT|LISTEN, which explored the conditions of the AIDS crisis in the U.S. and Canada, 2005-2008. Sember lives and works in New York.
