I am writing from Chicago's Goodman Theatre to inform you of upcoming summer
internship opportunities for your students.

 

Positions are available in Casting, Costumes, Development, Dramaturgy,
Education & Community Programs, Literary Management, Marketing/PR/Publicity,
Production Management, Scenery/Props and Sound. I have pasted descriptions
of these positions below along with the web address where students may
download an application form. All interns are paid a modest stipend and/or
may apply for college credit.

 

Applications for our summer 2009 session are due on March 1, 2009. The dates
for this session are June 1-Aug. 28, 2009.

CASTING INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: assisting with the preparation of character profiles and
actor call lists, as well as with scheduling and monitoring auditions;
covering the main casting line and its voice-mail; preparing routine
correspondence, including rejection letters and responses to actor
inquiries; maintaining casting files; and attending artistic staff meetings.
Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are negotiable
within reason.

Requirements: Applicants must have excellent communication skills, and must
be highly organized and detail-oriented. Experience with casting is a plus.

COSTUMES INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: observing the costume design process and day-to-day
management of the costume shop; assisting with routine clerical tasks and
costume construction for a variety of period and contemporary productions;
assisting guest designers as needed. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28,
2009. Start/end dates are negotiable within reason.

Requirements: Practical knowledge of sewing equipment, materials and
clothing construction is essential.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: observing the process of fund-raising for a not-for-profit
institution with an annual budget of $16 million; assisting staff with
opening nights, benefits and other special events; maintaining database and
donor information; compiling mass mailings; and assisting with preparations
for board and committee meetings. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009.
Start/end dates are negotiable within reason.

Requirements: Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and computing skills
are essential.

DRAMATURGY INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: conducting research for plays in production and under
consideration, as well as for newsletter articles and program notes;
attending rehearsals; compiling and updating rehearsal scripts; helping to
maintain the Goodman's in-house library; and attending artistic staff
meetings. Requirements: Excellent research, writing, and proof-reading
skills are essential, and applicants must demonstrate appropriate knowledge
of dramatic literature and theater history. Experience with playwriting
software is also a plus. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: working as a teaching assistant during the General Theater
Studies summer program; conducting research for shows in the 2009-2010
season; assisting with teacher seminars, student matinees and Context
discussion events; corresponding with teachers, parents and students;
processing data on Tessitura; and attending artistic staff meetings.
Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are negotiable
within reason. Requirements: Strong writing background (journalism and/or
heavy research experience preferred); proficiency with Adobe InDesign or
other design software; interest and passion for arts education; attention to
detail; ability to work independently. Teaching/education experience a plus.

LITERARY MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: assisting with the solicitation, cataloging, and
evaluation of new manuscripts, as well as with correspondence to
playwrights, agents, theaters and play development programs; conducting
research on playwrights; helping to maintain the Goodman's in-house library;
attending rehearsals; compiling and updating rehearsal scripts; and
attending artistic staff meetings.

Requirements: Excellent analytical, writing and research skills are
essential, and applicants must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of dramatic
literature and playwriting. Experience with playwriting software is also a
plus. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are

MARKETING/PR/PUBLICITY INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: observing strategies and procedures for marketing and
publicizing the Goodman's season to 23,000 annual subscribers and the
general public; compiling audience survey results; distributing promotional
materials; assembling press and review packets; preparing actor bios;
maintaining publicity archives; and assisting with media events and opening
nights. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are
negotiable within reason. 

Requirements: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing, and
proof-reading skills are essential, as is a basic knowledge of Microsoft
Word and Excel. Experience or coursework in communications-related fields is
also desirable.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: observing the planning and technical management of a
year-round season that includes world premieres, new interpretations of
well-known works, co-productions, festivals and staged readings of
works-in-progress; assisting with routine clerical tasks and special
projects; conducting research for specific productions; assisting stage
management as needed; attending production meetings. Internship will run
June 1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are negotiable within reason. 

Requirements: The ability to lift, push, or maneuver 50-70 lbs., either
alone or with assistance from others. Organizational and multi-tasking
skills are also essential, as are communication and research skills and a
practical knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience in one or more
areas of production is desirable.

Responsibilities: observing the planning, construction and implementation of
the scenic and prop designs for Goodman Theatre productions; assisting with
routine clerical tasks; conducting research for specific productions;
observing the load-in, tech and load-out process. Internship will run June
1-Aug. 28, 2009. Start/end dates are negotiable within reason.

Requirements: The ability to lift, push, or maneuver 50-70 lbs., either
alone or with assistance from others. Organizational and multi-tasking
skills are essential, as are communication and research skills. Practical
knowledge of Microsoft Office is required, knowledge of Quicken and AutoCAD
a plus. Experience in technical production desirable.

SOUND INTERNSHIP - Goodman Theatre

Responsibilities: observing the sound design process and learning advanced
procedures for installing, operating, and maintaining sound equipment in
different sized and configured spaces; assist the house audio supervisor, as
well as resident and guest designers, in creating sound scores for both
period and contemporary productions. Internship will run June 1-Aug. 28,
2009. Start/end dates are negotiable within reason.

Requirements: Basic knowledge of sound equipment and principles of sound
design is essential. Experience using computerized sound systems is also a
plus.
