STAND is organizing a ?thunderclap<https://www.thunderclap.it/> around the midterm elections, which are fast approaching on November 4th. We will be targeting Ed Royce, the chair of the Foreign Affairs Commission in the House of Representatives, and asking what he will be doing to assure the safety of civilians on the ground in Syria and Iraq, especially during US airstrikes. Here is the link to the thunderclap.<https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/17983-promise-to-protect-civilians> The aim of this thunderclap is to use the hype (however small it may be) surrounding the midterm elections to draw attention to the issue and hold elected officials accountable by provoking public statements.


Along similar lines, here is the link to a petition<http://www.change.org/p/barack-obama-protect-civilians-during-airstrikes-in-iraq-and-syria?utm_campaign=new_signature&utm_medium=email&utm_source=signature_receipt> asking the US government to exercise the extreme caution and assure civilian safety to the level of "near certainty" when launching airstrikes in Syria and Iraq.
