<span>Progress towards the Millennium Development Goals in maternal and child health in Africa must be rapidly accelerated if the goals are to be achieved. Africa today accounts for more than half of the maternal and child deaths in the world, and Nigeria,
with 2% of the world's population currently has 10% of the world's maternal deaths. Significant campaigns have been mounted to address these crises by intergovernmental organizations such as the UN and its bodies, African governments in cooperation with bilateral
donors, and non-governmental organizations of both local and international origins.</span></p>

to raise awareness of the status of women and children's health across the continent and assess efforts to 1) reduce child mortality and 2) improve maternal health and that of all women in Africa. </span></p>
