Assistant Director of New Student Orientation and Community Programs

Student Affairs





The Assistant Director of New Student Orientation and Community Programs is
a member of the Kenyon College Student Affairs staff and reports directly
to the Associate Dean of Students.  The Assistant Director of New Student
Orientation and Community Programs has primary responsibilities in the
following areas: general student affairs, pre-orientation programs, and
community service programs.  The Assistant Director also has
responsibilities in these areas: Crozier Center for Women, Take Back the
Night Committee, Craft Center, student affairs website management, and the
student conduct process.  In cooperation with the other Student Affairs
staff members, he or she shares an awareness of and concern for all aspects
of each student’s academic, residential and extracurricular life.



Essential Functions of the Assistant Director of New Student Orientation
and Community Programs



ORIENTATION PROGRAM

A.     Coordinate organization of the Fall Transfer Orientation events and
Spring Transfer Orientation.

B.     Co-manage selection, training, and logistical aspects of the
Upperclass Counselor Program.

C.     Work with the Director to update all Orientation publications,
online forms, and website.

D.     Coordinate and direct all aspects of the Pre-Orientation Service
Program and Outdoors Club Pre-Orientation Program, including coordinator
and leader selection, program publicity, participant selection, and program
scheduling and content.

E.      Oversee the pre-orientation student coordinators, student leaders,
and program participants while on campus.

F.      Coordinate evaluations and review programs.

G.     Evaluate potential new programs and assist in development of these
programs as needed.


COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS

A.      Serve as primary administrator for student community service
programs.  Direct community service advisory board.

B.     Coordinate community service efforts for Fall and Winter Activities
Fair and community service fairs.

C.     Plan and execute community service days with student leaders.

D.     Serve as liaison to community agencies in Knox County.  Serve as
liaison to Kenyon students and organizations in their community service
efforts, including Alternative Break trips and extended projects.

E.      Plan and execute an Alternative Spring Break trip sponsored by
Student Affairs for students to spend at least 5 full days doing
service.  Serve
as the staff advisor for the trip.



CROZIER CENTER FOR WOMEN AND TAKE BACK THE                       NIGHT
COMMITTEE

A.     Supervise Crozier Center Student Manager, and work with Crozier
Center Board to select Student Manager and other Center residents at the
end of each academic year.

B.     Supervise Crozier Center facility, including basic maintenance,
repair and needs.

C.     Coordinate with Student Manager to oversee program offerings,
including purchase of supplies and equipment.

D.     Advise Crozier Programming Board.  Attend programming board meetings
and events.

E.      Actively seek to establish partnerships and opportunities to
collaborate with Women’s and Gender Studies department, as well as the
greater Knox County women’s community.

F.      Advise the Take Back the Night (TBTN) Student Organization in the
week long educational events to be executed in early Fall Semester.

G.     Select TBTN co-chairs and subcommittee chairs to plan annual events
like a Speaker, Supporters Group, Survivors Group, Speak Out, and the Light
up the Night Carnival then also working each year to execute any new ideas
for the week.



CRAFT CENTER

A.     Supervise Craft Center Student Manager, and work with Craft Center
Board to select Student Manager at the end of each academic year.

B.     Supervise Craft Center facility, including basic maintenance, repair
and needs.

C.     Work with and support Center instructors, including ensuring the
timely receipt of paychecks.

D.     Oversee program offerings, coordinate with Student Manager the
Center schedule, coordinate Open House and Sign-up Days, and the purchase
of supplies and equipment.





STUDENT DISCIPLINE

A.     Assist the Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities with the
coordination of the College Conduct Process, participating in student
disciplinary process and attending meetings as scheduled; hear discipline
cases as assigned.

B.     Participate in Conduct Review Board hearings as needed.





GENERAL STUDENT AFFAIRS AND ADMINISTRATIVE

A.     Assist the Dean of Students and Associate Dean of Students with
general student advising and office responsibilities.

B.     Supervise the following campus facilities and the student managers:
Old Bank Building and Weaver Cottage.

C.     Advise designated students on Conditional Enrollment.

D.     Maintain and update websites linked to the Dean of Students pages.

E.      Participate in the Student Affairs Division “on call” schedule.

F.      Attend scheduled Student Affairs Division staff meetings, events,
and programs.

G.     Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students and the
Associate Dean of Students

relationships, extroverted, good sense of humor, open-minded, independent
worker but also team player

B.     Emotional stability: ability to operate under pressure; not easily
frustrated.

ability to make rationalized decisions and consider multiple perspectives

D.     Assertiveness:  project-oriented; high personal energy level and
initiative; self-starter

E.      Creativity:  ability to recognize new methods, adapt to the
changing needs of the office, and establish appropriate procedures;
evaluate and reconsider current program models

F.      Strong organizational skills.



Supervisory Responsibilities



Responsible for supervising student managers of Craft Center, Crozier
Center, Weaver Cottage, and Old Bank Building, all employees of Craft
Center, and co-supervise 125 Upperclass Counselors, Student Affairs Intern,
and an Administrative Assistant, shared with Associate Dean of
Students..  Supervision
includes establishing schedules, training, assessment and reviews, an
ensuring a productive, positive work environment.



Working Conditions



Work in generally performed in an office environment. The ability to lift
boxes or items of 30 pounds or less and move tables and chairs when needed
for meetings is required. In addition, the ability to work some evenings
and some weekends is essential.



Minimum Qualifications



A.     Masters degree required, preferably in a Higher Education, College
Personnel, Counseling or a related field.

B.     Two years experience in Orientation or Community Service programs;
at least 1-3 total years of experience in Higher Education.

C.     Must have an appreciation for the value and role of student affairs
in furthering the goals of a liberal arts education

D.     Knowledge and application of student development theories.

E.      Excellent organizational skills.

F.      Ability and willingness to work with various campus and community
constituencies.

G.     Demonstrated strong ability in oral and written communication
.

H.     Ability to do long- and short-range planning.
