Assistant Director, Diversity Services

The Assistant Director of Diversity Services will coordinate educational programming and support services for the various diverse populations at Suffolk University. This position will pay special attention to those issues that most affect LGBTQ and ally populations and will serve as the primary resource for LGBTQ issues and concerns. This individual will be dedicated to working in a collaborative environment, committed to furthering the intellectual, moral, and social development of students.



Program Development

* Design and implement diversity and social justice programs to address the needs of the Suffolk community. Specifically responsible for ongoing programs including LGBTQ History Month, National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, Lavender Graduation, Day of Silence, the weekly LGBTQ student dinner, and Asian Heritage Month.
* Work with the director to design and implement the annual Social Justice Education Series and the Multicultural Summit to foster cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
* Facilitate the development, refinement, and implementation of social justice and diversity trainings and workshops, including, but not limited to, Diversity 101, Social Justice Education, Safe Zone, Ally and Bystander Development, and Disability as Diversity. Work collaboratively with other offices to support their mission and programming with meaningful diversity and social justice education
* Manage the Diversity Peer Educator Program, including hiring and training student peer educators to facilitate social justice and diversity workshops.
* Collaborate and assist other staff in the development and coordination of programs, events and services.
* In collaboration with other staff, evaluate existing programs and strategize areas of improvement and future development.

LGBTQ Consultation and Support Services

* Act as a resource and advocate for individuals in the Suffolk community who have questions or concerns regarding sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or other diversity related issues.
* Support members of the community who have experienced discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or other aspects of diversity and assist them in reporting such incidents to the appropriate authorities and university personnel in accordance with university policy; local, state, and federal law.
* Monitor the needs and quality of life for LGBTQ students. Identify gaps in services as they relate to LGBTQ students and, if necessary, work with programs and departments on campus to encourage the development of programs designed to address the identified gaps.
* Establish and maintain a network of referral sources related to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression both on- and off-campus.

Student Organization Support

* Serve as an ad hoc advisor to several affinity groups based in the Offices of Diversity Services and Student Leadership & Involvement.

Management Responsibility

* Supervise two (2) graduate fellows and other students working in Diversity Services to fulfill practicum requirements.
* Oversee the training and development of student employees.
* Recruit, train, promote and coordinate opportunities for student volunteers.

General Departmental Duties

* Along with the Director, provide frontline support and referral services for all students who contact the office for assistance.
* Manage the department's website content.
* Coordinate the department's marketing, communication and social media efforts.
* Represent the university/division on committees outside of the university.
* Represent the department on various university committees and working groups as assigned, including the President's Commission on Diversity Affairs.
* Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

* Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Justice, Counseling, Education, Sociology, Psychology, or other related field.
* 2-4 years full time post-masters experience working in higher education, preferably working in diversity services/ multicultural affairs.
* Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
* Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office. Advanced computer skills such as web publishing, databases and graphics are preferred.
* Experience in event planning.
* Experience working closely with students and student groups.
* Experience designing and delivering highly impactful social justice and diversity trainings and workshops is preferred.
* Experience developing and implementing new programs and services is preferred.
