2012 Summer Internship for LGBT & Housing Concerns

Graduate Student Internship - Joint appointment with Housing Services and LGBT Resource Center
Full time, 5 to 8 weeks - Flexible start and end time between June 8 and August 3, 2012.
Room and board provided. Unpaid position.

Deadline to apply: February 24, 2012.

Essential Functions:


Intern will receive supervision by LGBT Resource Center staff and training on aspects of directing an LGBT Resource Center (programming, training, advocacy, budgeting), as well as gain valuable experiences working with a large housing program. Activities include:
Consortium Project - Intern will develop and complete a Consortium Project to be shared with members of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals. The project will be developed once the intern is on-site.
Housing Activities - Intern will meet with Housing staff to determine tasks or activities that will assist in the development of Residence Life training and programming (e.g. training modules for Housing student staff, program efforts with Stonewall Hall, Welcome Week planning).
Summer Orientation Activities - Intern will help facilitate "Building Commons Ground" sessions during New Student Orientation, working alongside staff in the ethnic and gender program offices. Intern will also assist with outreach tabling during the Activities Expos.
Professional Development Activities - Intern will participate in staff discussions regarding student affairs issues, supplemented by readings and resources, on topics such as career development, professional/personal boundaries, budgeting, and serving diverse student populations.
Center Activities - Intern will interact with students and visitors to the LGBT Resource Center, including opportunities to facilitate student discussion groups or present summer programs.
Site Visits - Intern will visit LGBT Resource Centers at campuses such as UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU San Bernardino, the Claremont Colleges, the University of Redlands, and UCLA.


Qualifications:

Currently enrolled graduate student within a student affairs graduate program or a student applying to enter a student affairs graduate program in Fall 2010. Experience working with Housing/Residence Life or with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender students in a higher education environment. The successful candidate will understand sexual orientation, gender identity, and student development issues; be sensitive to the effects of racism, sexism, heterosexism, genderism, and other forms of oppression on the student experience; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.
